Champions League preview; Real Madrid vs Dortmund
I take a look at the Champions League final and try to argue for and against for both teams to come out on top.
On Saturday, the world will be tuning in to watch the UEFA Champions League final, which will be contested by the 14-time champions Real Madrid and the 1997 winners Borussia Dortmund. Spanish side Real, are the most succesful in the competition's history.
Dortmund are a bit more of a Champions League novice. In recent times, the last time they were even in a final was 11 years ago, where arch-rivals Bayern Munich beat them at Wembley. Maybe this is a sign of destiny getting fulfilled that Borussia Dortmund getting to another final at the same venue 11-years on?
Borussia Dortmund's season in the Champions League has been a case of them being the plucky underdog defying the odds and coming out on top. On Saturday, this will be how the narrative will get played.
The Germans are up against Real Madrid after all, the greatest side in the tournament's history in terms of titles (14). Dortmund can hurt Real with the trickery of Jadon Sancho as could Los Blancos with Vinicius Junior.
On paper, Real will no doubt be favourites, but Dortmund have some players that can cause the opposition problems. Edin Trzic's side will go into this game with nothing to lose, which will make them dangerous as it has done in the whole Champions League campaign.
In head to head meetings, Real Madrid fare far sueprior, but in a one-off final, surely the past goes out of the window? This final, will be settled by the smallest of details. The optimist of me, wants to see the fairy tale, the story of David, in this case that would be Dortmund, defeating Goliath, which wuld be Real Madrid in this story.
Real always find away. They're like the Germans of old, they should be never written off and they always find away. But if there was a way, I could see this game finishing like BVB's second leg against PSG.
