I learnt both Portuguese and English simultaneously. It so happens that my mother had this British friend, an English Language Teacher, who offered to tutor me in English when I was only a toddler. She expertly taught me to speak, read and write British English for as long as 20 years, which has given me native-like fluency. Despite the fact that I have no academic background in the English Language (I went to medical school), it would be reasonable to say that I possess an excellent command of the English Language Grammar and Syntax, in which I specialise, and a solid knowledge of modern teaching methodologies such as The Communicative Approach.
I believe teaching is really about inspiration, not information. Effective teaching focuses on why and how, not what. The goal should be to spark each student’s imagination, to find a hook in their heartand mind so that they feel a need to learn the material. The rest is easy, because the student then drives his or her learning. My role as a teacher is to ask provocative questions, and to help the students make a path towards the answers. If they are motivated to find the path, they will carve it themselves. If I have to pull out a mental machete to expose the path, then I haven’t done my job.
I believe teaching is really about inspiration, not information. Effective teaching should always strive to spark each student's imagination.
It should be both fun and purposeful.
When a student is eager to learn, learning becomes a breeze.
